Minn Kota vs MotorGuide: The Clash Of Two Rivals!

Minn Kota vs. MotorGuide has been a decades-long debate at every boat dock in America. After testing both extensively and speaking to countless seasoned anglers, here’s my detailed comparison of their strengths and differences.

Last updated: January 1st, 2025

Minn Kota Overview

For years, Minn Kota dominated the trolling motor market until Lowrance Ghost and Garmin Force arrived with their innovations. While they may not hold the crown anymore, Minn Kota continues to offer features that perfectly suit the everyday angler’s needs.

What I appreciate about Minn Kota is their range of options for every budget. You’ll find everything from inexpensive transom mount motors to premium models with auto-stow and deploy features.

They’re also the pioneers of Spot-Lock, a GPS anchoring system that’s now standard on most of their motors.

For saltwater anglers, Minn Kota offers their Riptide series. Their corrosion-resistant design helps these motors last longer in harsh conditions.

One of my best features of their trolling motors is the built-in sonar, which many other companies are also doing.

MotorGuide Overview

MotorGuide has been a long-time rival of Minn Kota. MotorGuide trolling motors have many of the same features and benefits at a similar price.

Like their rival, they provide a full range of options, from basic transom mount to advanced bow mount models packed with the latest technology.

MotorGuide has become extremely popular in the kayak angler circle because they’re one of the only companies that manufacture a bow mount trolling motor for kayaks, the Xi3.

The Xi3 easily topped our best kayak trolling motor round-up because of the PinPoint GPS feature.

One feature I particularly appreciate about MotorGuide is their HD+ Universal Sonar compatibility. This allows you to use almost any brand of sonar with their compatible motors – a huge advantage if you’re upgrading or switching systems.

MotorGuide vs Minn Kota Side-by-Side Comparison

MotorGuide and Minn Kota offer many similar features on their trolling motors. Let’s break down what each brand offers to help you determine which ones are most important to you.

Mounting Options

Mounting Options: Motorguide Or Minn Kota?

Both companies have multiple options for mounting. Whether you’re looking for a bow mount, transom mount, or pontoon mount, MotorGuide and Minn Kota have trolling motors for you.

The mounting option will contribute to the features available for that electric motor.

This section is a tie. Both companies have all the mounting options you need.

Steering Options

This is another section where both brands are neck-to-neck. Whether you prefer a tiller handle, foot pedal, or wireless remote, you’ll find these options in either lineup.

No trolling motor provides all three. Both MotorGuide and Minn Kota offer models with traditional cable steering or modern digital control systems.

Since they match each other in terms of the number of options, this section is also a tie.

Battery Saving Technology

Both brands have stepped up their battery efficiency game. Minn Kota uses their Digital Maximizer technology, while MotorGuide counters with Digital Power Management. Each system claims to extend battery life up to five times longer than standard motors.

I’m not convinced that one outperforms the other. Hence, this section too is a tie.

Durability

Minn Kota was once known for the durability of its electric trolling motors. I own and still use an old Minn Kota Endura.

However, Minn Kota has added more technology to its motors in recent years. Since then, customers have noticed a drop in durability and customer service.

Minn Kota claims that every motor is manufactured in Mankato, Minnesota.

MotorGuide has attempted to address durability concerns with features like 360-degree breakaway mounts, no-flex metal foot pedals, and premium materials. Yet they have also been plagued with subpar durability and customer service.

It appears that better customer service would make a world of difference for both manufacturers. Do note that this section is yet another tie.

PinPoint GPS For MotorGuide vs Minn Kota Spot-Lock

Minn Kota pioneered Spot-Lock trolling motors. They’ve come a long way since then, and still probably have the best anchor lock on the market.

That said, most companies are comparable in this category, including MotorGuide.

As long as you keep the anchor mode system updated, MotorGuide PinPoint GPS will work nearly as well as Minn Kota Spot-Lock, but Minn Kota has a slight edge due to experience.

Stand Out Features

Minn Kota and Motorguide Stand Out Features

MotorGuide’s stand-out features are responsive true cable-steering, HD+ Universal Sonar, PinPoint GPS, Zero-G lift assist, 360-degree breakaway mount, and a no-flex metal footpedal.

While the Tour Pro packs all these features, other MotorGuide models offer select premium capabilities.

On the Minn Kota side, you’ll find iPilot and iPilot Link, Universal Sonar 2, Autopilot, Built-In MEGA Imagining, and auto-stow and deploy.

The Minn Kota Ulterra is the only trolling motor with auto-stow and deploy, but a few of their other models have advanced features.

Minn Kota has a slight edge with the auto-stow and deploy feature, but MotorGuide has the 360-degree breakaway mount, which can save the day on the water.

Ultimately, it comes down to your preference.

Conclusion: Minn Kota Or MotorGuide

After extensively testing both brands, I can tell you that either manufacturer will serve you well. They’re more alike than different, but there are some specific situations where one brand might better suit your needs.

Consider Minn Kota if you:

  • Want auto-deploy and stow
  • Prefer American-made motors
  • Run the one-boat-network

Consider MotorGuide if you:

  • Fish from a kayak
  • Often hit submerged rocks and stumps
  • Prefer metal parts, including the foot pedal
